It Is Electric in 1904

At the appointed hour the street and every house that has been wired glowed with a brilliance that shows the public spirit of enterprise that exists here and that is making Eldon a rural city. The new plant power is supplied by a Warner Induction Alternator with a capacity of 75 K.W. or 1500 bulbs.

"N.E. Harvey... announced that the lights would go on. At the appointed hour the street and every house that has been wired glowed with a brilliance that shows the public spirit of enterprise that exists here and that is making Eldon a rural city. The new plant power is supplied by a Warner Induction Alternator with a capacity of 75 K.W. or 1500 bulbs."

the Miller County Museum shared some additional details with me on one of my facebook posts… It is Electric

The Eldon Electric Company had it’s business office on Maple Street in the Montgomery Ward was… but I am not sure where that was yet….

The map is incredibly detailed, you can zoom in and see what type of business occupied each building.

Things to note:

  • the Red Buildings are made of brick, while the legend does not say what the yellow ones are, the 1920 Sanborn Map states yellow are framed with wood.

  • Note that The Craft Building (Ice Cream Factory) & Serendipity Roasting Company Brick Buildings are not on the map in 1913.

  • You can see where the Missouri Pacific Railroad Line passed through Eldon. It runs next to what is now Nickel Brick Trading Co.

  • Looks like downtown supported a couple barbers and a couple bakeries.

  • There was a wagon shop, remember this was when the roads were still dirt.

  • The Craft Factory has not been built yet
